Handmade Jewellery Students from Millwood and Lockeview High Schools studied with jewellery artist Candice Prior as part of a joint school project in conjunction with the The Nova Scotia Department of Education's "Challenge for Excellence" program. Students learned traditional and contemporary methods of design and construction. They also explored the history of personal ornamentation and the project concluded with exhibitions of student work held at the schools. |

With appropriate program planning, the possibility for a gifted student to reach his/her potential increases. Providing programs and services for students with gifts and talents requires planning at each level of the school system. The purpose of the Challenge for Excellence program is to assist boards in developing programs and services for students with gifts and talents in their regions. This project was planned to enhance the learning opportunities for students at a variety of levels and grades by introducing them to an artist, a process workshop and a concentrated period of time to explore the idea (and materials) of jewellery and the cultural traditions of personal ornamentation. |
