The Power is in Your Hands A group of enthusiastic young students from Cole Harbour District High School worked with Halifax artists Cindy Cain and Rosella Fraser to compose their own creative pieces as part of their Independent Study project in African Canadian Studies 11 class. Drawing inspiration from their own rich heritage and life experiences as youth of today, this talented group of students produced songs, dances, poetry, rap and visual art to express their thoughts and ideas, including these works incorporating plaster casts of their hands. |

To produce these art panels, the students were divided into two groups. One group focused on empowerment statements - Reach for the Sky, I am who I am, Standing Tall but Never Alone, and Violence is not the Key to create a graffiti style work, while the other group drew upon the power of nature and the statement, We all have many paths we can take in life, using a tree as their focal point and mountains to represent the other challenges we face in life. These artworks reflect the students’ strong voices and a desire to speak out from within. |
